Charla: The "X" in the Archives w/ Josh T. Franco
Contact UNO Office of Latino/Latin American Studies - OLLAS (402) 554-3835

The UNO’s Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) along with El Museo Latino kick off the first OLLAS Charla for the Fall 2019 semester on Tuesday, September 17th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm, with a presentation by Josh T. Franco, PhD, National Collector, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, at El Museo Latino (4701 South 25th Street).

The “x” in “Latinx” short-circuits meanings and jumpstarts conversations about gender, language legitimacy, North-South dynamics in the Americas, generational transformation and political solidarity. “What does it mean?” is an important question. Another question is “What does it do?”

At the Smithsonian, researchers have close contact with the personal documents of some of the most significant artists and institutions that constitute American art. Handling and searching the correspondence, sketchbooks, and other primary source documents in the Archives of American Art, scholars experience intimate contact with the visual culture living in these documents. Where does “x” appear among the papers of U.S. Latina, Latino and Latinx artworkers? How have they used “x” in their daily thinking as it is made evident in original notes and drawings? Art historians are trained to identify where the visual and the social converge and produce one another. Through specific examples discovered in the Archives of American Art, this presentation puts this training to use in an analysis of the “x.” To contribute meaningful responses to the question “What does ‘x’ mean?” we ask: What does “x” do in the Archives?

*No need to print ticket, by RSVP it helps us plan the best event possible for the number of people attending.
