Omaha Table Talk | Storytelling As Remembrance: Black Art and History in the 100th Year of Will Brown's Lynching

On September 28, 1919 in Omaha, Nebraska Will Brown lost his life to a violent lynch mob based on the accusations of a white couple and without any consideration of due process or his humanity. He was lynched and his body was brutalized.

One hundred years later, efforts to memorialize his life and death in Omaha have given rise to Black Art that remembers Will Brown, as well as other painful events in the history of Black Omaha. Storytelling is a tradition and a radical method to retain the stories and history of Black Americans. Omaha’s local theater community has given rise to beautiful plays about our shared Omaha history and the efforts to memorialize Will Brown have given rise to documentarian efforts. Join the conversation around art and radical remembrance, around Will Brown, racism, the media and our shared painful past.
